You have probably heard of New Year's Resolutions, and chances are you either hate them or love them. What I want to help you with today is how to make a New Year's Resolution, in 3 easy to follow steps.
The first step is to identify something that you want to change. This change is your resolution. In other words, you resolve to yourself that you will make this change you have chosen. The resolution could be a habit you want to adopt, a bad habit you want to get rid of, or a change you want to make in your environment. Don't choose a change you want to make in another person, because that won't work. Another person will only change if they want to change. You can change yourself, though, and that often will spark a change in someone close to you. Once you have identified what it is that you want to change, write it down. Describe this change and how you will feel when it has been accomplished. Draw a detailed picture about what the change looks like. You can use words or pictures, it doesn't really matter.
The second step is to map out a plan of what needs to be done to bring about your resolution. What small changes do you need to make in order to get you on the right path to see your big change take place? What steps will lead you there? Break the steps down into small, bite-size pieces and list them. Leave a space along one side of your list to check them off as you complete them, and leave a space along the other side of your list for notes. You may want to adapt some of the steps as you go along, and you can jot down notes about what you have done for each step. Display this list where you can see it and be reminded of it daily. Figure out how long it will take you to do the steps you have listed and write on your calendar when each step should be accomplished.
The third step is to start taking action. All the plans in the world do not mean anything if they are not acted upon. The biggest reason that many people never follow through with their New Year's Resolutions is because they simply never take action. Work up some momentum, so that one action spurs the next action to take place. Never stop until you are done. Don't be a quitter. Be a finisher. You can do it, you were born to do it. You were born to be an accomplisher.
